There has been a lot of suspense about this camera and wether it is even possible to live up to the hype that has been spread like wildfire online. Of course on paper it looks amazing. The build, the design, the features, the video capability, the new sensor, the built in OLED EVF (which is super duper uber FANTASTIC), and the tri-navi controls are everything the enthusiast market has ever wanted in a small take anywhere camera. Hell, I suspect the NEX-7 may even create more of us crazy gear heads because even when Uncle Joe sees this camera he is going to want one.

It has a way of making people wonder what the hell you are shooting with, and when they learn about it they seem to want to own one for themselves. This has happened to me three times while out and about shooting with the NEX-7. BUT the real question for me while shooting was to determine if it did indeed live up to the hype and was worth shelling out $1200 for the body alone, which to be fair is $6800 less than a Leica M9-P and you can still mount your favorite Leica, Zeiss ZM and Voigtlander M mount glass on to! Hell, you can mount just about any glass to this NEX-7, which makes it pretty damn special right there.

Report: 10 killed in clashes in Yemen

By Hakim Almasmari

November 11, 2011 — Updated 1209 GMT (2009 HKT)

Yemeni anti-government protesters take to the streets in the southern city of Taiz on July 22, 2011.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Medics: 32 others are wounded
  • Clashes have intensified in recent days
  • One medic says he can’t reach the wounded because of fierce shelling

Sanaa, Yemen (CNN) — Government forces shelled southwestern Yemen on Friday, killing 10 people and injuring 32 others, medics said.

Fighting was ongoing in six areas in Taiz province, witnesses said.

Clashes have intensified in recent days as protesters demand the ouster of Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Families started evacuating from the province over fears clashes will escalate in coming days.

Medical staff in Taiz’s Freedom Square confirmed the death of six civilians.

“It’s not fair. Why are the government killing innocent civilians? They are attacking our houses and killing our families,” said Ali al-Radhmi, a resident of Taiz..

“The shelling is nonstop and it seems as if President Saleh wants to completely destroy Taiz before he leaves power because it was the launching pad for protests against his regime.”

Medic Yasser al-Nusari said he’s been unable to reach the square for more than two hours to treat the wounded because of the fierce shelling.

“The government shelling has been nonstop since 5 a.m. The number of wounded will rise and many have not been able to reach the medical camp,” he said Friday.

A 8-year-old and a 3-year-old were among those killed in clashes, witnesses said.

A senior security official in Taiz said an opposition group is targeting pro-government tribal leaders purposely and vowed to hold them accountable for the killings.

“The opposition does not understand that the current government is still the legal government and wants to put matters into its own hands. This is why these clashes are taking place and innocent people are dying,” said the official, who is not authorized to talk to media.

The defense ministry also blamed opposition fighters for killing two pro-government tribal leaders in Taiz.

Hundreds of thousands of youth protesters gathered for the weekly Friday march in Taiz calling on international powers to not give Saleh immunity for the killings of unarmed protesters.

Anti-government marches are taking place in 14 of the country’s 21 provinces Friday.

17 killed in Iran base blast

By the CNN Wire Staff

November 12, 2011 — Updated 1921 GMT (0321 HKT)

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • NEW: 17, not 27 deaths and 16 injuries are reported, officials clarify
  • NEW: General dies as a result of the explosion
  • Some of the injured are in critical condition

Tehran (CNN) — At least 17 people, including a general, died as a result of an explosion on a military base near Tehran, Iranian state media reported Saturday.

The blast happened around 1 p.m. (4:30 a.m. ET), when a munitions depot accidentally caught fire at the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) military base in Bidgeneh village, located on the outskirts of Shahriar city and about 35 kilometers (21 miles) west of Tehran, lawmaker Hossein Garousi, told state media. Earlier reports indicated that there may have been more than one explosion.

The IRGC revised initial reports that 27 people had died, the semi-official Fars agency reported.

Gen. Ramazan Sharif also told state media that the accident took place during an operation to “move some munitions and equipment needed for IRGC’s current operations.

At least 16 people have been injured and some are in critical condition, Sharif said. Windows were shattered and buildings were damaged.

Fars also reported that Maj. Gen. Hassan Tehrani-Moqadam, in charge of IRGC’s Office of Self sufficiency, was killed as a result of the explosion.

Deputy Police Chief Gen. Ahmadreza Radan told Fars that rescue workers were at the scene.

“Rescue workers are currently helping the victims. The explosion took place far from residential areas,” Radan said, according to Fars. “The explosion is being investigated and the public will be informed of new developments.”

Three teams of rescue dogs , together with three ambulances and several rescue teams were dispatched to the scene, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported, citing the Red Crescent. Rescue helicopters are also on alert and will help in transporting the wounded to hospital, the agency reported.

“The streets around the barracks have been closed to speed up the rescue mission. Only six rescue workers and six sniffer dogs were allowed to enter the barracks.,” said the Islamic Republic News Agency, quoting Mahmoud Mozaffar, the head of Iran’s Red Crescent Society. He said heavy smoke delayed and hampered rescue operations.

CNN’s Shirzad Bozorgmehr and Mitra Mobasherat contributed to this report

Opposition: Dozens killed in Syria

By the CNN Wire Staff

November 11, 2011 — Updated 0053 GMT (0853 HKT)

Report: Syrian protesters targeted

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Opposition group says 38 dead, including 6 children
  • Death toll in Homs reported to be 16, including an infant
  • Witnesses said explosions erupted in parts of Khan Chikhoun into the night
  • Fighting there was thought to be between security forces and defectors

Cairo (CNN) — At least 38 people, including six children, were killed Thursday by security forces across Syria, a network of opposition activists said.

In the besieged western city of Homs, the 16 fatalities included an infant who died at Al-Bir Hospital, the Local Coordination Committee of Syria said. The child, who was bleeding in the colon, died after security forces prevented the transfer of blood to the hospital, they said.

Activist Mahmud Tayyara was killed by a bullet to his head fired at a checkpoint in Homs’ Me’zanatain neighborhood, the committee said.

Ten people were killed in Idlib, six in Hama, three in the suburbs of Damascus and three in Daraa, said the LCC, which organizes and documents anti-government demonstrations.

The bodies of three young men who had been riding in a taxi that was stopped by security cars were found Thursday in Hama, the organization said.

CNN could not confirm the accounts, since the Syrian government has limited access to the country by international reporters.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that military reinforcements have arrived at the entrances to the city of Khan Chikhoun in Idlib province, where more than 17 members of the Syrian army and security forces had been killed and dozens wounded since Thursday afternoon. The fighting was believed to be between the government security forces and army defectors, the group said.

“It has been confirmed that 15 soldiers have defected from the army in the same area Thursday night” after the clashes began, the opposition group said. The army and the security forces have withdrawn from most government and security buildings in the city as well as from a main health clinic, it added.

Witnesses said explosions erupted in parts of the city into the night.

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency said two children from al-Moallaqa village in the northern province of Idlib were killed Thursday “after explosives hidden by a terrorist armed group in an abandoned house blasted in the village.”

It added that two members of the government security forces died and two army members were wounded “by a terrorist armed group” in the village al-Kfair village in Jisr al-Shugur.

As the government crackdown continued, Amnesty International urged the the Arab League to press Damascus to allow independent human rights monitors into the country.

President Bashar al-Assad had promised to abide by an Arab League proposal to halt all violence, release all detainees, withdraw all armed elements from populated areas and allow unfettered access to the nation by journalists and Arab League monitors.

But since that agreement, Amnesty International said, more than 100 people are reported to have been killed. The human rights monitor said most of the dead appear to have been unarmed protesters and bystanders who were shot by the security forces and army.

“Killings and arrests of unarmed protesters and others continue to be reported on a daily basis, making a mockery of Syria’s promises to the Arab League,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty International’s acting director for the Middle East and North Africa.

Amnesty International wrote Thursday to the Arab League, asking it to secure access to Syria for Amnesty International staff as well as those of the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

More than 3,500 Syrians have been killed since the government crackdown on protesters started in mid-March, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights estimated.

CNN’s Kamal Ghattas contributed to this story from Atlanta.

For young Muslims, Hajj pilgrimage reawakens Islamic values

Muslim pilgrims gather in Medina, the burial place of the prophet Mohammed, for the Hajj pilgrimage.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • More young Muslims embarking on Islamic pilgrimage than ever before
  • 2011 Hajj could be a flashpoint for global Islamic revival
  • Pilgrimage is a defining moment in the life of Muslims
  • Follow iReporters as they complete their Hajj

(CNN) — Each year, more than 3 million Muslims commit to Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca that represents the fifth and final “pillar” of Islam and the largest annual human gathering on the planet. Every Muslim who is physically and financially able to do so is expected to make this pilgrimage once in their lifetime.

As described in the Hadith of Gabriel, each pillar of Islam acts as a guide to day-to-day conduct for Muslims, outlining proper professions to God, prayer and spiritual mindfulness, not unlike the Book of Common Prayer for Anglicans or Judaism’s Siddur.

For this year’s Hajj, iReporters from around the world documented their journeys, describing their experiences as they complete this Islamic sacrament. Thanks to the power of social media and platforms like CNN’s iReport, they’ve been able to share their faith with the world, giving Muslims and non-Muslims alike a glimpse of the significance of this powerful and transformative event.

The 2011 Hajj also holds special significance for Muslims in the wake of the Arab Spring this year. Though the pilgrimage has traditionally been thought of as an undertaking for middle-aged or senior Muslims, increasing numbers of young pilgrims have been making the trip to Mecca in the past decade.

While on Hajj, Muslim pilgrims travel great distances to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, during the last month of the Islamic calendar, which is tied to the lunar calendar. At Mecca, nestled among the mountains and deserts of the western part of the country, lies the Sacred Mosque. This is the spiritual epicenter of Islam and the location of the Kaaba, the first Islamic house of worship, built by the patriarch Abraham and his son Ishmael. When Muslims orient themselves to Mecca for their five daily prayers, they are praying in the direction of the Kaaba.

During Hajj, “One needs to spend money, exert one’s body, behave with character and in all of that turn sincerely to God,” says iReporter David Coolidge, 32, a Muslim chaplain at Brown University. “If one can spend a few weeks totally devoted to one’s faith, it makes it that much easier to make one’s faith a living reality when one is at home and living one’s ordinary life.”

Jeddah, the “city of pilgrims,” the first official stop on the Hajj

As iReporter Amaan Haq explains, Muslims engage in prayer and contemplation at Mecca for several days, undertaking rituals meant to spiritually purify themselves and bring their souls into better alignment with God.

“The major rituals include walking around the Kaaba seven times, drinking from the holy Zamzam Well and holding a vigil at the plains of Mount Arafat led by an Imam, a Muslim cleric, kind of like a priest,” he said. These observances are then followed by a three-day festival called Eid al-Adha, a global celebration for all Muslims commemorating Abraham’s piousness and obedience to God.”

Haq, 27, made this year’s Hajj with his wife, whom he recently married. He describes his pilgrimage as “quite breathtaking,” remarking on the powerful sight of people from all walks of life gathered in the same ceremonial garb, for the same purpose.

“I saw people from Brazil, Spain, from China, from Japan — Muslims from all over the world speaking different languages, coming with their own cultures and ways of doing things, but all gathered here because of their bond with Islam,” he said.

Haq views his Hajj as a powerful renewal of his faith, expressing his awe at the sheer number of people gathered at Mecca and the sense of fulfillment he feels at seeing the Kaaba with his own eyes.

“Islam hasn’t been seen in a very positive light over the past decade, but this event really shows how everyone from all walks of life, from all over the Earth, is out here for the same purpose,” he said. “It’s amazing. There’s no type of discrimination here. Everybody is gathered here as one body. There’s this powerful feeling of brotherhood and togetherness.

“Growing up in a Muslim family and reading about it or seeing videos of it, none of that helped me grasp what was actually going on. When you actually do it, it’s very strenuous. It’s hard work. But it’s also the most rewarding thing I’ve done in my life.”

Video tour of Mecca

Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, credits the enthusiasm of young Muslims to participate in Hajj to a “revival, an Islamic awakening around the world, part of which we have seen in the Arab Spring.” Though Muslims in particular may be reconnecting with Islamic values, he notes that a belief in unity, peace and justice is a central principal of all Abrahamic faiths.

Awad also believes that in times of global turmoil and economic uncertainty, many young Muslims are drawn to the Hajj out of a yearning for equality and camaraderie. All pilgrims at Mecca are expected to dress and behave in a manner that removes all outward signifiers of wealth or social standing and focus entirely on their spiritual development.

“I think many young people are rediscovering the proud heritage of Islam and that they belong to a higher cause,” he said. “And I think more people are going on Hajj now because they want to attach themselves to that higher cause and the higher values that they sometimes see challenged by worldly governments and societies.

“It’s a rediscovery of their roots and their identity,” he continued. “Hopefully, that strength and momentum and that spiritual charge will help them go back to their societies and play constructive and moral roles in their communities.”

Closeup video of pilgrims circumambulating the Kaaba, one of the Hajj rituals

iReporter Yousef Awaida, 22, shares this belief in an Islamic awakening among Muslim youth, observing how Mecca during Hajj is a sea of tranquility and unity in one of the most turbulent regions on the planet.

“So many people have all come here for the same purpose: to seek God’s mercy and forgiveness,” he said. “In reality, many of these people, when not in Mecca, will fight and spill each other’s blood. But in this moment, in this city, I have not seen one confrontation.

“Here, Muslims can strengthen the foundation of their faith: Being one people, who worship one God.”

That’s a sentiment echoed in Amaan Haq’s experience while on Hajj.

“I’ve never really had this feeling in my life,” he said. “To know the importance of this landmark, in this city, in this place. To know the history of the people who have been in this place and worshipped in this city — not just in our lifetime or generation but throughout history — that’s an out-of-this-world feeling.”

A previous version of this story incorrectly referred to the Book of Common Prayer as a text for Catholics. It is a book of prayers and services for Anglicans.

Bahrain arrests five suspects in alleged terror plot

By the CNN Wire Staff

November 12, 2011 — Updated 2111 GMT (0511 HKT)

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Five alleged terror suspects targeted Bahrain Interior Ministry and Saudi embassy
  • Qatari security authorities discover four of the five entering Qatar
  • The fifth suspect is arrested in Bahrain

(CNN) — Bahraini authorities discovered “a terror cell” and have arrested five people for allegedly planning attacks against government and diplomatic buildings as well as unidentified individuals, officials said Saturday.

The discovery of the alleged plot began when Qatari security authorities arrested four Bahrainis who entered Qatar from neighboring Saudi Arabia, said a Bahrain Ministry of Interior spokesman.

The suspects were carrying documents and a laptop “containing sensitive security information and details about some places and vital establishments in Bahrain, as well as airline bookings to Syria,” the spokesman’s statement said. The suspects were also carrying a “significant” amount of U.S. dollars and Iranian toman, the spokesman said.

The Qatari Security Authority learned that the four suspects left Bahrain “after being incited by others to head to Iran,” and then they passed through Qatar and Syria “to establish a group that carries out armed terrorist operations in Bahrain,” the interior ministry spokesman’s statement said.

Among the alleged targets were the Ministry of Interior building, the King Fahad Causeway, and the Saudi Arabia Embassy, the spokesman said.

Qatari authorities sent the four suspects to Bahrain on November 4, where they were charged with planning “terror crimes,” the spokesman said.

The four defendants provided information about a fifth suspect in Bahrain, who was also arrested, Bahraini authorities said.

Regime backers express anger at other nations after Arab League suspends Syria

Syrians show their support for President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on November 13.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • NEW: The Syrian National Council cheers the Arab League’s decision
  • Videos purport to show regime backers at the Saudi embassy and Turkish consulate
  • Anti-regime activists say there were attacks at a French consulate as well
  • They were in reaction to the Arab League’s call to suspend Syria’s membership

(CNN) — Angry supporters of the Syrian president rallied Saturday night at embassies and consulates of countries that voted hours earlier to suspend Syria’s membership in the Arab League, anti-government activists said.

Videos posted on YouTube purportedly showed several of the events. One from Damascus shows a large crowd of people chanting as they gathered outside Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Damascus. Another, from Aleppo, shows angry backers of President Bashar al-Assad yelling as they appear to break through barriers at the Turkish consulate. Some demonstrators are seen taking a Turkish flag, which previously hung over the consulate, and burning it. Neither YouTube video showed any evident violence.

Anti-government activists tell CNN that supporters of the Syrian regime also attacked the Turkish and French consulates in Latakia.

CNN could not independently confirm the accounts because Syria has not granted international media access to the country.

The developments came after 18 of the Arab League’s 22 members voted to punish Syria in an emergency session at its headquarters. The move to suspend Damascus’ membership in the alliance — a stinging blow to al-Assad — takes effect Wednesday.

Only two member nations — Lebanon and Yemen — voted against the measure. Iraq abstained and Syria was barred from voting.

Why did Arab League move on Syria?

The league also called for sanctions against al-Assad’s regime, but did not specify what those may include.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim read the league’s decisions at a news conference after the meeting of the foreign ministers.

The league called on member states to withdraw their ambassadors from Damascus, a decision that will be left up to each nation.

And perhaps most surprising of all, the league urged the Syrian army to stop attacks on civilians and said that it will hold a meeting with opposition groups in the next three days to discuss a transitional phase in Syria’s future.

The Syrian National Council, a leading opposition group, welcomed the league’s decision, calling it “a step in the right direction, and a clear condemnation of the Syrian regime.”

“The National Council emphasizes its readiness to participate in discussions regarding the transitional period within the scope of the Arab League, to ensure the stepping down of Bashar Al-Assad and the transition to a democratic government that represents the Syrian people and does not (include) anyone from the regime whose hands have been tainted with blood,” it said in a statement.

The fact that the league, the formal family of Arab states, took such a bold step against a nation that prides itself as the beating heart of Arabism, is a major development, said Fawaz Gerges, director of the Middle East Centre at the London School of Economics.

“Syria is now as isolated as ever,” Gerges said. “I would call it a game-changer.”

The Arab League’s stated purpose is to strengthen ties among its member nations, coordinate their policies and promote common interests. But the divisions among the 22 nations have diminished its effectiveness.

In the case of Syria, however, the league’s decision could open the door for broader international sanctions against the al-Assad regime.

The punitive measures come after al-Assad’s failure to abide by an Arab League proposal earlier this month to halt all violence, release detainees, withdraw armed elements from populated areas and allow unfettered access to the nation by journalists and Arab League monitors.

But none of that has happened, according to daily reports streaming out of Syria.

There have been reports of civilian deaths in the last few days and Saturday was no exception. The Local Coordination Committees, a network of opposition groups, reported 21 people dead, including 10 in Homs, the restive city that has emerged as the epicenter of the uprising.

With pressure on Syria ratcheted up, some fear an escalation of brutality in the next few days.

Syria’s representative to the league, Yousef Ahmad, blasted the alliance’s decision as illegal.

He said it was “a eulogy for Arab common action and a blatant announcement that its administration is subordinate to U.S.-Western agendas,” according to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency.

Earlier Ahmad had reiterated the government’s claim that terrorist gangs were behind the violence and said Syria “made strides” in quelling the violence “despite armed groups’ attempts to foil the plan since it was announced.”

Western leaders welcomed Saturday’s decision.

“After the al-Assad regime flagrantly failed to keep its commitments, the Arab League has demonstrated leadership in its effort to end the crisis and hold the Syrian government accountable,” said U.S. President Barack Obama.

“These significant steps expose the increasing diplomatic isolation of a regime that has systematically violated human rights and repressed peaceful protests,” he said in a statement.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton echoed those comments, calling the action “strong and historic.”

“The United States commends the principled stand taken by the Arab League and supports full implementation of its efforts to bring a peaceful end to the crisis,” Clinton said in a statement.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said the league’s actions show “that it is time to increase pressure on the Syrian regime.”

Human rights activists have been pushing for weeks for the United Nations to take action and Amnesty International said Saturday that the Arab League’s decision should pave the way for the Security Council.

“Now that the Arab League has taken decisive action, it is time for the U.N. Security Council to finally step up to the plate and deliver an effective international response to Syria’s human rights crisis,” said Philip Luther, the monitoring group’s Middle East and North Africa director.

Human Rights Watch has also urged the Security Council to impose sanctions.

It published a damning 63-page report Friday, based on interviews with victims and witnesses in Homs, that said al-Assad’s regime’s “systematic” crackdown on civilians amounted to crimes against humanity.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights said earlier this week that more than 3,500 people have been killed in the brutal suppression of dissent since the Syrian uprising began eight months ago.

CNN’s Ben Wedeman and journalist Mohamed Fadel Fahmy in Cairo contributed to this report.

Report says Syrian crackdown amounts to crimes against humanity

A pro-democracy crowd demonstrates against President Bashar al-Assad outside Arab League headquarters in Cairo on November 2.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • 37 people were killed across the country Friday, an activist group says
  • Human Rights Watch urges Arab League to act against Syria
  • Suspend Syria, the group says, and refer it to the International Criminal Court
  • The watchdog group’s new report describes torture, killings and other abuses

(CNN) — The Syrian government’s “systematic” crackdown on civilians amounts to crimes against humanity, Human Rights Watch said in a report issued Friday.

The watchdog group has already urged the Arab League to press President Bashar al-Assad’s government to allow human rights monitors into the country. Now, it is urging the Arab League, which has called an emergency meeting in Cairo on Saturday, to suspend Syria’s membership and to ask the United Nations Security Council to impose sanctions.

It also said Syria should be referred to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands.

Human Rights Watch highlighted what it called “the systematic nature of abuses against civilians” by the Syrian regime, “including torture and unlawful killings.”

It based its 63-page report on more than 110 interviews with victims and witnesses from the besieged city and governorate of Homs, which has emerged as the center of the months-long uprising.

The death toll climbed again Friday as the Local Coordinating Committee, a network of opposition groups, reported violent clashes across Syria. It said 37 people were killed, 21 in Homs. The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported 15 deaths, 10 in Homs.

CNN is unable to confirm information from Syria since the government has limited access to the country by international reporters.

The state-run SANA news agency said two members of the Syrian security forces were killed Friday in Homs. It blamed gunfire from “terrorist groups,” as it has in the past.

Human Rights Watch said Syrian security forces have killed 104 people (not including Friday’s deaths) in Homs since November 2, when al-Assad agreed to abide by an Arab League proposal to halt all violence, release all detainees, withdraw all armed elements from populated areas and allow unfettered access to the nation by journalists and Arab League monitors.

But none of that has happened, according to daily reports streaming out of Syria.

“The same killing is happening on a daily basis — shooting, arresting people, firing at peaceful demonstrators,” Zaidoun Alzoabi, a Syrian activist, told CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360″ Friday by phone from Damascus. “The regime seemingly doesn’t want to move to a peaceful transition to a democratic Syria.”

Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch, called on the Arab League to take action against the Syrian government.

“The Arab League needs to tell President al-Assad that violating their agreement has consequences, and that it now supports Security Council action to end the carnage,” Whitson said.

The league could vote Saturday to suspend Syria from its organization, but the move would be a largely symbolic gesture. Arab League Secretary-General Nabil el-Araby acknowledged Friday in an interview with CNN that the league’s persuasive powers are limited.

“What can we do more than that?” he said. “I’m not defending anyone or any country or the Arab League or anything like that, but there are facts of life. If you want to tell a government — any government — to stop what they are doing and they are not persuaded and if you need to enforce, it’s outside our league. We don’t do that.”

Human Rights Watch focused on security force violations from mid-April to the end of August. In that time, security forces killed at least 587 civilians in Homs, the highest number of casualties for any single governorate, the report said.

One woman who protested in Homs’ Bab Dreib neighborhood with her 3-year-old on August 15 described to Human Rights Watch how civilians came under attack.

“We went out in a peaceful protest with the whole family about 10:30 or 11 p.m. It was calm, so everything seemed OK,” she said.

“Then, two cars showed up suddenly and opened fire, targeting people even as they were ducking and lying on the ground. They were white Kia Cerato cars with tinted windows, like those used by air force intelligence. The guns were machine guns. My husband leaned over our son to protect him, but the bullet entered our boy’s stomach. The doctors were able to remove the bullet, but it left a lot of damage.”

Human Rights Watch also spoke to 25 former detainees who said they had been tortured in custody. They described various methods, including heated metal rods, electric shocks and being forced into stress positions for hours or days at a time.

“They brought me into what felt like a big room with lots of people inside,” said one detainee at a military intelligence base in Homs.

“They beat (me) with cables and then hanged me by my hands from a pipe under the ceiling so that my feet weren’t touching the floor,” the man said.

“I was hanging there for about six hours, although it was hard to tell the time. They were beating me, and pouring water on me, and then using electric stun guns. For the night, they put me into a cell, about 3 by 3 meters, along with some 25 other detainees. We were all squeezed together. Next morning, they brought me in for another interrogation. This time, they “folded” me, pushed my legs and head into a tire, flipped me on my back, and started flogging the soles of my feet.”

Human Rights Watch said detainee torture was becoming rampant in Homs, and the group said it is especially troubled by people dying in custody. Of the 17 deaths in custody the group has been able to document in Homs, 12 were a result of torture, it said.

The United Nations said this week that about 3,500 people have been killed since the start of the Syrian uprising eight months ago.

Syrian authorities have repeatedly blamed the violence in Homs on armed terrorist groups.

Human Rights Watch addressed that claim in its report, saying that “protesters appear to have been unarmed in most incidents … but armed defectors from security forces did intervene on some occasions after protesters came under fire from security forces.”

That statement was based on what Homs residents told the group about an increase in army defectors who sometimes picked up their weapons to protect civilians.

The report also noted that residents in some Homs neighborhoods have started to organize in local defense committees that often have firearms or even rocket-propelled grenades.

“Violence by protesters or defectors deserves further investigation,” Human Rights Watch said. “However, these incidents by no means justify the disproportionate and systematic use of lethal force against demonstrators, which clearly exceeded any justifiable response to any threat presented by overwhelmingly unarmed crowds. Nor would the existence of armed elements in the opposition justify the use of torture and arbitrary, incommunicado detention.”

CNN’s Ben Wedeman contributed to this report.

Photographer captures ‘new slaves’ of the Gulf

The cover image of “Workers Emirates,” Philippe Chancel’s new book of photographs of migrant laborers in the UAE.
Photographer Philippe Chancel likens the migrant workers to ghosts. “They were omnipresent but at the same time invisible, as if the eye did not see them as worth attention,” he writes.
Most of the migrant workers Chancel encountered were from India and Pakistan.
Workers on a construction site in Dubai. The photographer was most shocked by what he describes as the “indifference” of the rest of the population to the workers.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Photographer Philippe Chancel has released a book of portraits of migrant laborers in the UAE
  • Human Rights Watch says the exploitation of migrant laborers from South Asia is widespread
  • Chancel likens the laborers to “ghosts,” invisible to others in the Emirates

London (CNN) — Pirates? Ravers? At first glance, the portraits are startling and confusing.

Hidden behind sunglasses and hats, their faces shrouded in brightly colored scarves and t-shirts, these striking, enigmatic figures could as easily be rebel fighters as models at an edgy runway show.

In fact, they are migrant construction workers of the United Arab Emirates, mostly men from India and Pakistan whose cheap labor has powered the rise of the country’s skyscrapers.

The laborers — often subjected to exploitative working conditions, according to Human Rights Watch — are described by photographer Philippe Chancel as “the new slaves” of the Gulf.

“But they don’t look like slaves,” said the Frenchman, whose photographic study of the migrant workers was published as a book, “Workers Emirates,” last month.

They don’t look like like workers either, he said, their bright colors a stark contrast to traditionally drab depictions of laborers in the West.

“I try to give something very beautiful, a little seductive. I want not to denounce, but to give people the possibility to get inside a very deep problem,” Chancel added.

Chancel began visiting the Emirates in 2007, initially training his camera on the bold new architecture emerging out of the desert. But he soon became fascinated with the brightly-dressed workers in the margins of his viewfinder, a group which seemed to pass unnoticed by the surrounding society.

His hell is bearable
Photographer Philippe Chancel

“The most shocking thing for me is the violence of the indifference,” he said. Despite their vivid appearance, he likened them to ghosts. “They were omnipresent but at the same time invisible, as if the eye did not see them as worth attention,” he writes.

The men were anonymous, their faces were shielded from the sun, while their work barely registered with the majority of the population, which spent the day sheltered from the elements inside air-conditioned buildings.

Chancel began visiting their building sites and dormitory camps unannounced, shooting “very fast and very sharp” to capture realistic representations of the men and their surroundings. On one occasion he was arrested.

Having seen the squalid conditions in their dormitories, which he likened to a prison, he became further intrigued to discover the men, who earn salaries of about $160 a month, seem to accept their plight.

The climate of fear they live in means they can’t strike or protest
Priyanka Motaparthy, Middle East researcher at Human Rights Watch

“The worker is a slave, but he feels lucky to have an opportunity to try to meet his destiny,” said Chancel. “His hell is bearable.”

Priyanka Motaparthy, Middle East researcher at Human Rights Watch, said that some workers paid up to $4,000 to recruiters in pursuit of good wages and low living expenses, taking on significant debts just to get the jobs.

“Most are completely trapped by financial circumstances,” she said.

They are let into the country as temporary workers, usually on three-year permits. Tight immigration laws grant their employers extraordinary powers over their lives, with bosses keeping their passports and sponsoring their visas, meaning they cannot easily change jobs if they find the conditions intolerable.

“The climate of fear they live in means they can’t strike or protest,” she said.

The economies of the United Arab Emirates, and the other Gulf Cooperation Council countries of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Oman, are heavily dependent on foreign workers, with an estimated 15 million foreigners working in the GCC, according to the International Labor Organization.

“Many workers don’t know what they’re getting into,” said Motaparthy. “They’re not getting contracts that reflect what the job actually is, and the contracts aren’t in their own language.”

While there had been some improvements for workers in recent years, with governments introducing wage protection schemes and mandatory health insurance to be paid by employers, exploitation was still widespread, she said.

Chancel, who has also produced work on North Korea, is currently exhibiting in London, Paris, Montpelier and Dubai.

“I love the idea of the pictures coming back to the origin,” he said of the Dubai show. But there was little chance of his subjects coming across portraits of themselves in a Dubai gallery. “Of course not,” he said.

Regime backers rally after Arab League suspends Syria

(CNN) — State media showed throngs of demonstrators rallying in support of Syria’s president Sunday, a day after the Arab League’s decision to suspend the country’s membership

The Syrian government called for an emergency Arab summit as state television showed thousands of protesters packing public squares, waving Syrian flags and pictures of President Bashar al-Assad

Syrian officials also invited Arab League ministers to come to Syria before Wednesday, when the suspension is scheduled to take effect, the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency reported.

Anti-government activists claimed that many citizens were forced to join pro-regime demonstrations.

CNN could not independently confirm the reports because Syria has not granted international media access to the country.

The Arab League’s decision Saturday dealt a stinging blow to Syria, and could open the door for broader international sanctions against the al-Assad regime.

Why did Arab League move on Syria?

Eighteen of the Arab League’s 22 members voted to punish Syria in an emergency session at its headquarters.

Only two member nations — Lebanon and Yemen — voted against the measure. Iraq abstained and Syria was barred from voting.

The league called for sanctions against the Syrian government, but did not but did not specify what those may include. The league also called on member states to withdraw their ambassadors from Damascus, a decision that will be left up to each nation.

On Sunday, the Syrian government said civil and military observers, experts and Arab media could accompany Arab League officials on an inspection trip to the country, SANA reported.

Angry supporters of al-Assad rallied Saturday night at embassies and consulates of countries that voted to suspend Syria’s membership, anti-government activists said.

Videos posted on YouTube purportedly showed several of the events. One from Damascus shows a large crowd of people chanting as they gathered outside Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Damascus. Another, from Aleppo, shows angry backers of al-Assad yelling as they appear to break through barriers at the Turkish consulate. Some demonstrators are seen taking a Turkish flag, which previously hung over the consulate, and burning it. Neither YouTube video showed any evident violence.

Anti-government activists tell CNN that supporters of the Syrian regime also attacked the Turkish and French consulates in Latakia.

CNN could not independently confirm the accounts.

There have been reports of civilian deaths in the last few days and Sunday was no exception. The Local Coordination Committees, a network of opposition groups, reported 23 people dead, including 12 in Hama and six in Homs, the restive city that has emerged as the epicenter of the uprising.

More than 3,500 people have been killed in the brutal suppression of dissent since the Syrian uprising began eight months ago, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights said last week.

With pressure on Syria ratcheted up, some fear an escalation of violence in the next few days.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported heavy clashes Sunday afternoon between the Syrian military and armed groups of suspected defectors.

An Iranian parliament commission discussed the Arab League’s decision at a meeting Sunday and said Syria remains a close ally.

“Members of the national security and foreign policy commission reiterated support for Syria as a major axis of resistance,” said Kazzem Jalali, the commission’s rapporteur, according to Iran’s semi official FARS news agency.

But the Arab League was clear in its condemnation, urging the Syrian army to stop attacks on civilians and saying that it would hold a meeting with opposition groups in the next three days to discuss a transitional phase in Syria’s future.

The fact that the Arab League, the formal family of Arab states, took such a bold step against a nation that prides itself as the beating heart of Arabism, is a major development, said Fawaz Gerges, director of the Middle East Centre at the London School of Economics.

“Syria is now as isolated as ever,” Gerges said. “I would call it a game-changer.”

The Syrian National Council, a leading opposition group, welcomed the Arab League’s decision, calling it “a step in the right direction, and a clear condemnation of the Syrian regime.”

On Saturday, Syria’s representative to the league, Yousef Ahmad, blasted the alliance’s decision as illegal.

He said it was “a eulogy for Arab common action and a blatant announcement that its administration is subordinate to U.S.-Western agendas,” according to SANA.

Earlier Ahmad had reiterated the government’s claim that terrorist gangs were behind the violence and said Syria “made strides” in quelling the violence “despite armed groups’ attempts to foil the plan since it was announced.”

CNN’s Ben Wedeman and journalist Mohamed Fadel Fahmy in Cairo and CNN’s Yasmin Amer in Atlanta contributed to this report.
